Strings At Christmas - The Nutcracker

Join Wild Atlantic Strings in The Mall Theatre on 19th December to get your festive season off to the perfect start. 

The theatre will be transformed into a twinkling wonderland as we bring you all your Christmas favourites played by beautiful string quartet.

We will feature a new version of The Nutcracker specially arranged for narrator and string quartet, bringing this magical story to life with the beloved music by Tchaikovsky.

Sinéad Hayes - Violin

Galway conductor/composer and violinist is artistic director of Wild Atlantic Strings. She has conducted all the professional Irish orchestras & her work with Ulster Orchestra has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3. As a violinist she has performed with ConTempo Quartet & Newry Chamber Music and even played Irish fiddle with members of the Berlin Philharmonic in the Philharmonie, Berlin. Sinead gained a degree in composition and violin performance from City University, London, studying violin with Gerhard Schmidt at Guildhall School of Music. She subsequently earned a masters in conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, and currently studies violin with Kristina Yoder (Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra). After living in London, Berlin and Belfast she is now based in Galway.

Eszter Cetinceviz (1)

Eszter Cetinceviz - Cello

Born in Hungary, Eszter Cetinceviz has over 20 years’ experience as a professional orchestral and chamber musician. She acquired her Master’s Degree at The University of Miskolc Bartók Béla Institute of Music, where she studied with Klára Iván and started her career as a member of The Miskolc National Theatre Orchestra. Later on, into the Hungarian Symphony Orchestra Miskolc. The Orchestra regularly played at international festivals and in notable concert halls worldwide. They were also a constant performer at the Bartók Plus Opera Festival of Miskolc. She has performed many concerts with string quartets and chamber orchestras. Now based in Galway, Eszter is a core member of Wild Atlantic Strings. Currently, she is teaching cello at Coole Music in Gort and MCNG in Galway.

Nuala Ní Chanainn - Guest Violinist

Nuala studied in Cork School of Music with Cornelia Zanidache, in Oxford with Kato Havas, in Massachussets with Brian Clague and George Neikrug and in Galway with Bogdan Sofei.
She has been a professional musician since 1984, in Theatre ( Macnas, Druid, Axis, Footsbarn Travelling Theatre Co.), and in groups ( Máimín Cajun Band, String Company, Mariachi Guadalajara, Amarcord ,Corelli String Quartet, Soundpost String Quartet.
She plays many genres of music, incl Traditional Irish, Jazz, Eastern European/Gypsy.
Moving to Cork in 2012, she has played in Everyman/Cork Operatic Society productions of Pagliacci and Faust (conductor John O Brien).
She has been leader of the Cork Fleischmann Symphony Orchestra (conductor Keith Pascoe) for Bizet Symphony no. 1, Schubert C major (The Great), Mendelssohn violin concerto (soloist Mairéad Hickey), Bruch Scottish Fantasy (soloist Tamsin Little ), Verdi Requiem, and last November in City Hall, Beethoven piano concerto no. 3 ( soloist Kevin Jansson) and Scheherazade.
Nuala also works as a freelance as a player and violin teacher.

Eleanor Chapman - Guest Violist

Eleanor Chapman, after growing up in the seaside town of St. Anne’s, Lancashire in the UK, attended the Junior Royal Northern College of Music from the age of 16 and was awarded the Vicci Wardman Viola Prize. At this time she was helping to coach younger string ensembles in her area and followed this with further work in youth music engagement during her time studying viola at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, where she studied with Louise Lansdowne and Robin Ireland. A founding member of the Dunev String Quartet and the Gaia Ensemble, her interest in chamber music has lead to recording debut albums in 2019/20, and a UK quartet tour exploring the music of Beethoven, Grieg and Webern. To further her studies Eleanor came to Limerick in late 2020 to take part in a Masters programme with the Irish Chamber Orchestra. She has since been working as a tutor with their education sector and performing freelance with various Irish ensembles.
